The team at the Paramount saw a need to support Austin’s growing comedy scene, and in 2012 the idea for an annual comedy festival hosted at the Theatre, and 10 other centrally located walkable venues, became a reality. For the past seven years, the Moontower Comedy Festival has been dedicated to bringing world-class comedy to the city through a variety of performances in stand-up, sketch, and musical comedy by well-known performers and up-and-comers alike. The festival has also built a reputation for shining a spotlight on the wealth of hilarious Austin talent.
Moontower highlights include memorable performances from Tiffany Haddish, Bill Hader, Amy Schumer, Tim Minchin, Kids in the Hall, Patton Oswalt, Tig Notaro, John Mulaney, Ali Wong, Michael Che, Bridget Everett, and so many more. The festival also features an impressive lineup of live comedy podcast recordings each year, and the annual ping pong tournament pitting comedians against fans and each other with The Sklar Brothers providing color commentary is nothing short of a riot. And for those wanting to fill their nights with a sampling of the best comedians around, nothing beats the club shows, where sometimes ten different comics take the stage in an evening keeping the laughter rolling into the wee hours.
Over the years, Moontower has emerged as one of the nation’s premier comedy events and has been featured in media outlets ranging from Esquire and Rolling Stone to Paste and Vulture. Last year alone, Moontower hosted some of the top names in comedy including Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, David Spade, and the cast of Schitt’s Creek.
